Safety is not something to be taken for granted. Often, fire systems are installed and forgotten, never to be review again until there was a fire incident. However, this is the worst thing that can be done. How do you know for sure the fire system will work when it is needed?

Life safety systems are made up of elements that are designed to protect your building and its occupants during a fire or emergency situation. There are many components that make up life safety systems. Some of these components are:

• Fire alarm and detection systems

• Fire sprinklers and/or fire suppression systems

• Portable fire extinguishers

• Passive fire protection of buildings

On all these systems and products, the one aspect that stand out is regulation: Why? If these products do not work, there are lives at stake.

All fire products must have product approvals and carry certification as stipulated by the relevant fire standards (SANS 10139, SANS 246, SANS 14520, etc.). Product certification can only be applied to a product when issued by an accredited Certification Body (must have an ISO/IEC 17025 certification). These bodies must be independent, test reports should be available and traceable to the accreditation body (most test facilities have a search engine to help find test reports).
