From the creation of multi-purpose plastic-moulded crates for sectors ranging from Agri to Retail. Plastic Ideas goes beyond the simplistic efforts of an organisation that produces high-quality injection-moulded products.
In an interview with Gilda do Rego – Sales Director at Plastic Ideas – Retailing SA magazine gets an inside scoop about what it takes to be a leading manufacturer of plastic moulds for the manufacturing of crates and other plastic products, and still enhance the economic growth of a challenged South African society.
From the offset, this article will elicit the causal explanation for the inception of Plastic Ideas. In addition, this article will discuss how Plastic Ideas makes a highly impactful contribution to the retailing industry in South Africa and other parts of Africa. Moreover, this article will indicate the type of business that is conducted by Plastic Ideas which extends to a national, continental and international footprint.
A Causal Explanation for the Initial Establishment of Plastic Ideas
The company initially started with roots planted in the South African automotive industry, which turned out to be somewhat a venture short-lived due to unfair policy which passed judgement against Plastic Ideas for the reason being that it was established as a family business. However, since opting for the manufacturing of plastic crates and injection moulded products, the Plastic Ideas entity has grown as a reputable manufacturer of products that are sold to, both, African and South African divisions of large business conglomerates, and the informal trade sector.
“We were in automotive, and then obviously we had BBBEE restrictions. And because we were a family-owned company, we couldn’t comply. We, then, turned our focus towards crates. And we love what we do. My husband and his brother; they love designing and coming up with fresh ideas, and to also just see our products go out there in all the different colours. We are a proudly South African company,” states Gilda do Rego.
It is important, however, not to limit Plastic Ideas’ abilities solely to crate manufacturing. In addition to having roots in the automotive industry, Plastic Ideas also created polyurethane products for the mining industry and were even responsible for the manufacturing of moulds for homeware product giant, Tupperware as well as manufacturing carbon fibre wheels for Ducati. All this came before the company opted to manufacture its own, unique range of products.
We do everything inhouse from the design; making the mould; to running production. So, everything stays in house. We have a dedicated toolroom to assist with any maintenance of our moulds and if any changes need to be done.
Over and above this we also do the recycling of broken crates which is very important to reduce the carbon footprint in the environment,” says do Rego.
A Reliable, Considerate and Flexible Leader in the Plastic Injection Mould Product Industry
What sets Plastic Ideas apart from its competitors is its reliability and service– for big conglomerates and regular South African citizens, alike. In addition, Plastic Ideas is known to accommodate all the client’s plastic crate requirements and never turn down a customer’s hasty order. Flexibility is also a characteristic that the company prides itself on.
Our clients range from our walk-in retail clients to all sectors in South Africa and we have a dedicated logistics partner Bell Marketing logistics that ensures that our product is delivered anywhere in South Africa.
A Plan to Promote Financial Inclusion, Gender Equality and Economic Growth
Plastic Ideas is a company unlike any other, with its consideration of the surplus of South African societal ills, on top of the global climate crisis. This is evident in the existence of the company’s women-only sales team, which promotes the notion of feminism within business and corporate environments.
We also push to have our staff trained inhouse and take in apprentices from the National Tool Association to assist them with hours in our tool room, so it makes it easier for them to go out into the working environment and have an understanding of what a toolroom is all about.
In terms of financial inclusion, Plastic Ideas prides itself on wholesale factory retail, whereby regular people who own small business can buy crates directly from the manufacturing depot, offering convenience and quicker turnaround time and availability of stock.
“In a nutshell we are passionate about what we do, we empower our people, we are proudly South African, and we love crates,” asserts do Rego.
